Köpenick Town

Hall and Castle

The Town Hall can be found on the oldest street in Köpenick "Alt-Köpenick" formerly known as Schlossstrasse. It was built from Mark gothic style bricks between 1901-1904 and has a 54 metre high tower.

The Town Hall is famous beyond the countrys borders not only for its spendid architecture, but also through the swindle if the cobbler Wilhelm Voigt. In 1906 he dressed in a soldiers uniform and ordered the soldiers to arrest the then mayor and then disappeared with the citys treasure.

A permanent display reminds people the story of the "Robbery of Köpenick". In a second exhibition the story of the Town Halls construction is told. You can view the beautiful staircase, the council hall and the historic cash office.

On the castle island in Old Town Köpenick you can find the only originally preserved baroque castle in Berlin-Brandenburg. It was built between 1680-1690 on the remains of a Slav castle and renaissance palace and served the then Prussian king Frederick I as a summer residence and hunting lodge. The Castle Chapel built between 1683-1685 was the first Protestant sacral building in Brandenburg.

These days in the castle there is a Art Museum which contains Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo works of art.
Castle Concerts are held here regulary.
